Bowl Season, 2011

For the second year in a row, I’m presenting a hypothetical bowl schedule as if it were just cut down to the essential (and classic) bowls.

There are currently 35 bowl games. Ridiculous. I’ve cut it down to 16 (last year I had 12 + an amendment), and I think that makes for much more exciting match-ups. You won’t find any of the following abominations here: Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, Beef ‘O’ Brady’s St. Petersburg Bowl, Champs Sports Bowl, Chick-fil-A Bowl, BBVA Compass Bowl, Bowl, etc.

I’ve tried to keep proper conference tie-ins alive with these as well (Which is the reason you’ll AGAIN see Northern Illinois in a bowl game. The Tangerine Bowl was traditionally established as a vehicle to get a bowl matchup with the MAC champion.)

Once again, I’m not going to argue against the sentiment that a playoff system is probably best for everyone. I’m also not going to argue that what I’m about to do would ever happen (again) …

I think it’s interesting that a couple games under my scenario are consistent with the actual matchups this year. We still get LSU vs. Bama. Oregon still plays Wisconsin in the Grandaddy of Them All, and Arkansas still meets K-State in the Cotton Bowl Classic.
